Language brain mapping is a process by which scientists and clinicians identify which areas of the brain are responsible for language functions. This knowledge is essential not only for medical diagnosis, but also for the rehabilitation of conditions such as aphasia. What is Language Brain Mapping? - It is a method for identifying brain structures responsible for speaking, understanding, reading and writing. - Functional MRI (fMRI), electrocortiography or other neuroimaging techniques are used. - It is applied before brain surgery or in rehabilitation to determine which areas are affected and which are preserved. What is the relationship with aphasia? - In aphasia, especially after a stroke, language centers such as Broca's and Wernicke's areas are often affected. - Through mapping, the extent of the impact and the possibilities for compensation through other zones are detected. How does this help in therapy? - Knowledge of the individual language map helps the speech therapist to select the most appropriate techniques. - It can be used to track progress and optimize therapy. The Stroke and Aphasia Association promotes the importance of brain cartography as part of understanding and overcoming aphasia. This year the Association is implementing the project "I Communicate in Aphasia: In a Doctor's and Dentist's Office", funded by the Social Innovations Program of Sofia Municipality. It aims to raise awareness of the basics of language function and the need for specialized support.
