When words disappear from a person's vocabulary as a result of aphasia, communication can continue using alternative means. Language communication cards are one of the most effective and affordable tools for keeping in touch with others.
What are language communication cards?
- These are visual aids that contain images, words, phrases and symbols;
- They can be used to express needs, desires, emotions and reactions;
- There are standard cards, as well as personalized according to the daily needs of the person.
Why are they useful?
- Allow people with aphasia to communicate better with family, medical professionals, friends;
- Help reduce stress and frustration that often accompany the condition;
- Promote autonomy and a sense of dignity.
Example use
In the doctor's office, a person can point with his finger where it hurts through illustrations from the map. At home – he can choose what he wants to eat or what mood he feels. With the help of maps, predictability in communication is created.

Within the framework of the project "I Communicate in Aphasia: In a Doctor's and Dentist's Office", funded by the Social Innovation Program of Sofia Municipality, the Association for Stroke and Aphasia will create specialized language communication cards tailored to the needs in health and home situations.
They are expected to be available for free download from the association's website stroke.bg at the end of November this year. They will be adapted for four main scenarios related to health care:
- When visiting emergency medical care;
- When visiting a doctor's office;
- When visiting a dentist's office and
- When visiting the general practitioner.
Where to look for assistance?
