Ролята на логопеда при възстановяване след афазия

Aphasia is a language disorder that often occurs after a stroke and affects a person's ability to speak, understand, read or write. Recovery is not a quick process and requires perseverance, patience and professional support. The most important specialist in this process is the speech therapist.

How the therapy sessions work

Usually, therapy sessions are held several times a week, each lasting between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the patient's condition and capabilities. During these meetings, the speech therapist:

-        does exercises to restore understanding and expression through words and sentences;

-        includes games and visual stimuli that maintain interest and concentration;

-        uses communication cards, electronic applications or other alternative methods;

-        Track progress and adapt exercises to the results achieved.

Sessions can be held in specialized offices, in rehabilitation centers, but also in the patient's home, which is especially valuable when movement is difficult. The home environment also gives the speech therapist the opportunity to see how communication happens in reality – with the family, in everyday situations, and to offer practical solutions.

The invisible but key role of the speech therapist

The role of a speech therapist is far from being limited to speech and comprehension exercises. He is also an intermediary between the affected person and his environment. This includes:

-        Teaching the family how to use ready-made communication resources – maps, boards, mobile applications;

-        Creating personalized ways of communication – for example, symbols, gestures or short keywords that are meaningful to the patient and their loved ones;

-        Support for dignity and self-esteem – the speech therapist helps the person with aphasia to feel again a full and equal member of the family and society;

-        Counseling specific situations – for example, when the family needs to communicate with an institution on issues related to taxes, fees or documents, the speech therapist can offer alternative ways of expression and understanding so that the process is successful and stress-free;

-        Guidance for everyday life – from how to have a conversation in the store to how to communicate effectively with medical staff or social services.

Why early intervention is crucial

The work of a speech therapist is not only therapeutic, but also motivational – he helps the patient regain confidence that he can communicate again. The sooner rehabilitation begins, the better the results. Every small step is important – even the restoration of a single word or gesture can open the way to wider communication.

At the Association for Stroke and Aphasia (ASA), we believe that everyone has the right to quality speech therapy. That is why we have created language cards for complementary and alternative communication within the project "I communicate with aphasia: in a doctor's and dentist's office", funded by the Social Innovations Program of Sofia Municipality.  which will help their communication at the most important moments - when they need medical help.
