How can we tell if stroke treatment is improving?
One of the most reliable ways is through systematic collection and analysis of medical data.
The international RES-Q+ project, presented as part of Brain Awareness Week, is built on this principle.
What is RES-Q
RES-Q (Registry of Stroke Care Quality) is an international registry that collects information about the treatment of stroke patients.
Hundreds of hospitals from different countries participate in it.
The registry collects information about:
time to diagnosis
treatment provided
therapeutic methods used
treatment outcomes
These data allow doctors and health systems to analyze how stroke is treated in different hospitals and countries.
Why are such registries so important
In medicine, there is often talk about new technologies and modern equipment.
But the real question is:
what are the outcomes for patients.
Registries like RES-Q make it possible to track exactly this.
When hospitals enter information about their patients, they can see:
how quickly the diagnosis is made
how often modern therapies are used
what the treatment results are
This allows medical institutions to compare their results with those of other hospitals and improve the organization of treatment.
How it helps doctors
RES-Q is not just a statistical register.
It is a tool for improving medical practice.
When doctors analyze the collected data, they can discover:
which approaches give the best results
where time is wasted in diagnosis
how the organization of treatment can be improved
This allows medical teams to gradually improve their practice.
What this means for Bulgaria
Bulgarian hospitals are also participating in international initiatives to track stroke treatment.
Such registries are important because they allow:
comparison of results with other countries
discovery of good practices
improvement of the organization of treatment
The President of the Association for Stroke and Aphasia, Eng. Dorina Dobreva, emphasizes:
“Systematic data collection is the basis of any improvement in medicine. Without real information about the results, it is difficult to assess the effectiveness of treatment.”
The Deputy President, Dr. Georgi Georgiev, adds:
“Registries like RES-Q allow doctors to analyze their practice and learn from the experience of other medical institutions. This is one of the most effective forms of improving treatment.”
Brain Awareness Week – what the scientific projects showed
During the week, the Association for Stroke and Aphasia presented several European projects that show different aspects of modern stroke science.
They look at:
faster stroke recognition
prevention of recurrent strokes
analysis of medical data
the role of imaging
quality of treatment
All of these areas have one common goal:
better treatment and better outcomes for patients.
